If you receive Social Security benefits — or plan to — there is an account worth setting up today. The Social Security Administration’s “my Social Security” account lets you handle most routine business from your phone or computer, at any hour, without driving to a field office.

You can create or sign in to your account at ssa.gov/myaccount.

What you can do once you're in

For members already receiving benefits:

  • Change your direct deposit information, including after a move or a bank change
  • Download your SSA-1099 form for filing taxes
  • Print a benefit verification letter when a lender, landlord, or agency needs proof of income
  • Update your mailing address

For members not yet receiving benefits:

  • Apply for benefits and track your application
  • See personalized retirement estimates, useful for planning alongside VA compensation or military retirement
  • Check estimated spousal benefits
  • Get documentation showing you do not currently receive benefits, if a program requires it

In most states you can also request a replacement Social Security card without visiting an office.

A page built for veterans

SSA maintains a dedicated page for military members and veterans at ssa.gov/people/veterans. It includes a side-by-side comparison of VA disability compensation and Social Security disability benefits, information on expedited disability claims for some wounded warriors, and additional resources specific to military service.

That comparison is worth reading if you receive VA compensation and are approaching retirement age, or if you are helping a family member sort out what they are entitled to from each program.

Getting started

Visit ssa.gov/myaccount to create your account or sign in. For a complete list of what can be done online, including services for organizational payees and government agencies, SSA has a full service directory at ssa.gov/onlineservices.

If you have questions about how Social Security interacts with your VA benefits or military retirement, a Department of Utah service officer can walk through the specifics with you. Contact information for Department service officers is at utlegion.org.
