Honoring Dr. Guy W. Grenny: Post 72’s Beloved Past Chaplain Turns 99

May 6, 2026

American Legion Post 72 of Orem joins family, friends, and a grateful community in celebrating a remarkable milestone — the 99th birthday of Dr. Guy W. Grenny, World War II Navy veteran and longtime past chaplain of our Post.

A Life of Service

Dr. Grenny is one of Orem’s last remaining World War II veterans, having served his country in the United States Navy during the defining conflict of the 20th century. Generations of Oremites have come to know him not only as a veteran of that “Greatest Generation,” but as a community pillar whose voice has carried weight in classrooms, congregations, and ceremonies alike.

In 2023, Dr. Grenny stood as the keynote speaker at SCERA’s Celebration of Veterans event, where Post 72 presented the Parade of Service Flags in his honor. His remarks that day reminded those gathered of what service costs — and what it builds.

A Chaplain Who Carried the Post

For years, Dr. Grenny served as chaplain of American Legion Post 72, offering invocations at Memorial Day services, prayers at funerals for fallen comrades, and counsel to Legionnaires walking through illness, loss, and the quieter battles that follow military service.

The role of a Legion chaplain is unlike any other in the Post. It is a ministry of presence — at gravesides, at hospital bedsides, at the moments when words matter most and are hardest to find. Dr. Grenny carried that ministry with the steadiness of a man who had seen what war takes and chosen, in peace, to spend his life giving back.

Ninety-Nine Years Strong

Dr. Grenny marked 99 years of life. Thank you for your service in uniform. Thank you for the years you stood as our chaplain, lifting prayers for our living and our fallen. Thank you for showing two generations of Post 72 members what it looks like to give your whole life to your country, your community, and your faith.

The members of American Legion Post 72 wish you a most heartfelt happy birthday. We are proud to call you our brother, our chaplain, and our friend.

Happy 99th, Dr. Grenny. We’re already saving a seat for the centennial.
